Puppy Pre-School

Classes Suspended Until Summer of 2008

New puppy in the family? Beckett and Associates offers Puppy Pre-School for puppies 8 to 16 weeks old. The class runs 1 hour per week and lasts for 7 consecutive weeks.

The first class is an informational session for the owners to participate in without their puppies. This class provides the foundation for understanding how your dog learns and communicates and we will discuss common questions and problems about puppy hood.

Each of the remaining 6 classes are split into three sections: training, socialization and handling, and play. During the training section owners will learn positive training techniques for sit, down, stay, come, and how to get your dog to walk on a leash without pulling. We will also discuss how to teach your dog to "leave it," "drop it," and other useful commands.

The socialization and handling section is focused on exposing the puppies to all different kinds of objects, people, sights, and sounds. In addition, we will work on handling your puppies to get them used to being restrained and touched all over.

Last, but certainly not least, the puppies will have plenty of PLAY TIME with their classmates. This play time is fun for the puppies and owners, but is also the primary way that dogs learn bite inhibition.

Lindsay Picard has a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from UMass - Amherst and also has a certificate in dog training from Connecticut K-9 Education Center. After college Lindsay worked at Beckett and Associates as a veterinary technician for 3 years and in June 2006 she began teaching the Puppy Preschool here. Lindsay left her job as a vet tech in January 2007 to pursue a career in dog training. She is now an Apprentice Guide Dog Trainer/Instructor at Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation while still conducting the Puppy Preschool. Lindsay is also working toward the title of Certified Pet Dog Trainer (CPDT) which is the only nationally recognized certification for dog obedience instructors.

By the end of the 7 weeks you will have the tools necessary to train your puppy to be a well-mannered dog that you are proud to own.

Lindsay enjoys "practicing" her dog training skills on Haley, her lab/rottweiler/pitbull mix. After much training and hard work, Haley has earned her Canine Good Citizen certification from the AKC and she also enjoys going to Rally Obedience Competitions.
